Filling a gap…

I’ve just added this book to the “Appalachian Trail. Planning Guides.” category:

Davis, Zach.  Appalachian Trials: A Psychological and Emotional Guide to Successfully Thru-Hiking the Appalachian Trail. [San Francisco]:  Zach Davis, 2012.

This is one of the very few guides to planning for the MENTAL challenges of a thruhike.
And it doesn’t hurt that there’s some humor thrown in.

League of Extraordinary Friends

I am constantly amazed by my League of Extraordinary Friends–the people I know who are extraordinarily knowledgeable experts in such widely diverse areas as landscaping, photography, ornithology, botany, etc. etc. ad infinitum. One of these Extraordinary Friends is an expert, not in one field, but in many Sandra Friend is–in addition to being a loyal friend–a gifted writer, a naturalist, a traveler extraordinaire and a computer whiz. In this latter category, her website administration skills have, today, led me through getting Books For Hikers hosted on my own account (after four years of her hosting it for me), transferring the domain name to me, and upgrading my WordPress theme–so that I now have the flexibility to manage my website better.  A Friend/friend indeed.  Thank you, Sandy!!

Back in business

Ol’ eArThworm is back in the saddle…or rather, back on the keyboard…again.  I’ve added three new books under Appalachian Trail–Memoirs:

Barnes, David M.  Faithful’s Journey on the Appalachian Trail. North Charleston, S.C.: CreateSpace, 2010.

Davis, Jennifer Pharr.  Becoming Odyssa: Epic Adventures on the Appalachian Trail. New York: Beaufort Books, 2010.

Purdy, James C.  Just Walking: The Zen of the Appalachian Trail. Newton Falls, Mass:  Upper Falls Press, 2010.

and two new books under Food & Cooking:

Sailer, Dave.  Fire in Your Hand: Dave’s Little Guide to Ultralight Backpacking Stoves. North Charleston, S.C.:  CreateSpace, 2008.

This is a longer book than “Make Your Fire”  It has 32 chapters including stories and a lexicon and other information in addition to the how-to-make-some-stoves chapters.  You can read the complete description at http://stores.lulu.com/ultralight where Dave says, “If you just want a simple guide to making stoves, buy a copy of ‘Make Your Fire’…”–which is also described at that site.  If you go to Amazon.com and look up these two titles, you can ‘see inside’ them and take a look at the table of contents, etc. to get a better idea of what each one covers.

Sailer, Dave.  Make Your Fire: Dave’s Little Guide to Making Ultralight Backpacking Stoves. North Charleston, S.C.:  CreateSpace,         2008.

The latest news

Sorry for the lack of updating, folks.  I had a shoulder injury for months, and then surgery.  My right arm’s in a sling for a couple more weeks.  All keyboarding has to be hunt-and-peck with one hand and is frustratingly slow.  So, for months, I have been doing as little as possible.  Maybe when the sling comes off I’ll be able to two-hand again.  I hope so.  In the meantime, remain calm, do not panic, and check back now and then.
